Parkersburg South No. 1 in first release of girls Power Index

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — Parkersburg South holds the top spot in the first release of the 2017 MetroNews Power Index computer ranking, presented by AARP, for girls high school basketball.

The Patriots (9-2) hold impressive early season wins over Huntington (6-1), Morgantown (5-3) and Parkersburg (6-2).

Buckhannon-Upshur (6-1) is No. 2, followed by Huntington at No. 3 and Greenbrier East No. 4. North Marion (8-1) comes in at No. 5, the highest rated team out of Class AA.

Tucker County (8-2) is the highest rated Class A team, coming in at No. 18, as the Mountain Lions have significant wins over defending champion Gilmer County and 8-1 Wheeling Central.

The MetroNews Power Index is a computer based formula that factors in strength of schedule. Records listed are for games played through Wednesday, January 4.

MetroNews will release the first boys power index of the year on Wednesday, January 11, with the second girls release the following week.
