Man shot in his front door in Kanawha County

INSTITUTE, W.Va. — One man is hospitalized with gunshot wounds after an early morning shooting near the campus of West Virginia State University.

Kanawha County Sheriff’s Deputies say Cory Ellis, 23, was shot in the chest at point blank range.

“The only information we have is one, possibly two, males approached the residence and knocked on the door,” said Detective Sargent Sean Snuffer of the Kanawha County Sheriff’s Department. “The victim opened the door and was shot once in the chest.”

According to Snuffer witnesses could not provide a description of the assailants.  Investigators are not even sure if there was one man or two who fled the apartment complex on Washington Avenue..  Deputies spent Tuesday canvassing the neighborhood in hopes somebody saw or heard something and can help develop a description on a suspect.

Ellis was transported by vehicle to Thomas Memorial Hospital and then transferred to CAMC General where he is in stable condition.
