CHARLESTON, W.Va. — The longtime chief of the Loudendale Volunteer Fire Department in Kanawha County is dead after a freak accident in his driveway.

Deputies say Frank Fizer, 67, was killed when he was run over by his own vehicle Monday evening.

“His vehicle had broken down and he was attempting to push it into his driveway,” said Kanawha County Sheriff’s Department Sgt. Sean Snuffer. “He slipped over an embankment and the vehicle also slipped over the embankment and ran him over.”

Fizer’s wife was in the passenger side of the car and also suffered injuries in the crash. Snuffer said she tragically witnessed the incident.

Snow and ice on the driveway are blamed for causing Fizer to lose his footing.  The accident remains under investigation.

Fizer had served for many years as the chief of the Loudendale VFD until he retired.  However, he had recently returned to the position when the chief who took his place resigned.
