Fairmont Senior sophomore Dobbs with bigger role for AA defending champs

FAIRMONT, W.Va. — Zyon Dobbs started every game for Fairmont Senior last season as a freshman, helping lead the Polar Bears to the Class AA state championship.

He averaged around six points per game on the season, finishing second on the team in steals. With all-state standout Darhius Nunn graduated from the championship team, it has meant an even bigger role for the now-sophomore Dobbs.

“Last year was great, being able to learn from Darhius (Nunn), go under his wing and be able to play as a freshman,” Dobbs said. “(He taught me) to be patient and how to create shots, getting your shots off. Going against him in practice was probably the toughest thing that I had to do the entire year.”

Dobbs is a key part of the Polar Bears’ defending state championship team, along with junior Taevon Horton, senior Justin Lee, junior Dante Stills and junior Bryson Gilbert, among others.

“I’ve had to step up this year at the one and take control of the offense – but I’m just trying to keep playing my game,” Dobbs said. “We’ve had a great start to the year. Everyone is humble and ready to try and get back to the state championship game.”

The Polar Bears entered the week at 6-2 with an out of state loss to Warren Harding (OH) and setback to Class AAA defending state champion Morgantown.
