FAIRMONT, W.Va. — Class AAA No. 5 Morgantown erased a fourth quarter deficit on Monday night in the MLK Classic from Fairmont to beat No. 2 Musselman 77-70.
Nicky Solomon led Morgantown (8-2) with 29 points, while Torin Hanson added 18 points in the win.
“I thought we came out a little flat, but they’re a very good team and I give them a whole lot of credit – they don’t have any weaknesses,” said Morgantown coach Dave Tallman. “They have size, they have strength and a D-I point guard. Our guys really set down and guarded well in the second half. We shared the ball and had great production from our bench probably for the first time this year. It was a 12-man effort.
The two teams were tied 39-39 at the break and Musselman led 56-54 heading into the fourth. Musselman (8-1) was led by Jake Stephens and Cam Stephens who both scored 16 points.
“Our guys came into this game 7-2 and we’re not used to losing around here,” Tallman said. “Our guys really wanted this win, playing the No. 2 team in the state that was undefeated. We have a tough week ahead of us and we wanted to start it off the right way. I give our guys all of the credit.”
