State unemployment rate falls slightly in December

CHARLESTON, W.Va. – While higher than the national average, West Virginia’s unemployment rate fell slightly to 5.9 percent in December.

The state saw gains in the fields of construction, transportation, trade and education and health services.

Total unemployment is down 1,600 people over a year period.

Despite the positive change, West Virginia’s unemployment rate is higher than the national rate, which is 4.7 percent.
