Police search for suspect in connection with Clay shooting death

MAYSEL, W.Va. — State police are looking for a Clay County man in connection with the Thursday morning shooting death of another man.

Police in Clay County are looking for Craig Holcomb.

Police believe Craig Douglas Holcomb, 41, of Maysel, was shooting from the woods at a mobile home located on Blue Knob Road in Maysel early Thursday in connection with a domestic dispute with a woman inside the residence. When police arrived to investigate, they noticed a man’s body in the woods where Holcomb was originally spotted, State Police First Sgt. O.S. Starsick said.

“They approach this person and they find it to be a deceased male,” Starsick said.

William Christopher Belknap, 38, died of a single gunshot wound.

“Belknap traveled to this location on Blue Knob with Holcomb and he ends up dead, not from any action from the trailer,” Starsick said.

Troopers and Clay County deputies were searching for Holcomb Thursday afternoon. There remain a lot of questions surrounding Belknap’s death, Starsick said.

“Everything is at a speculation point at this intersection in the investigation–until we get to talk to him,” Starsick said. “Evidence is still being analyzed.”

Holcomb has been charged with seven counts of wanton endangerment. There were seven people inside the mobile. Several gun shots did strike the residence but there were no injuries, police said.

Anyone with information on Holcomb is asked to call state police at 304-286-3185 or 911.
