Wanted Clay County man in custody

MAYSEL, W.Va. — The man wanted in connection with a Thursday shooting death in Clay County was taken into custody Friday morning, state police said.

Craig Holcomb was arrested Friday morning.

Craig Holcomb, 41, of Maysel, was arrested in Maysel after breaking into a home to get warm, according to State Police First Sgt. O.C. Starsick.

“Troopers responded and found Holcomb inside the house on the couch,” Starsick said.

Holcomb was taken into custody without incident. He was charged with nighttime burglary.

Troopers want to talk with Holcomb about the shooting death of William Christopher Belknap. Belknap’s body was found in the edge of the woods on Blue Knob Thursday morning. Belknap, 38, was with Holcomb when Holcomb allegedly fired shots at a mobile home, troopers said. Holcomb was charged with seven counts of wanton endangerment Thursday.

An autopsy was performed on Belknap’s body Friday, Starsick said.

“We’re waiting on the findings of it to continue the investigation on the appropriate charges,” he said.

Holcomb is in jail on $250,000 bail.
