Rain, snow affect Mountain State to begin workweek

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — A special weather statement from the National Weather Service in Charleston issued Monday afternoon said minor flooding would be possible through Monday night with moderate to heavy rain in the forecast.

“As this rain moves through, runoff will continue into small streams, creeks and roadside ditches. This may cause minor flooding problems, especially in low lying areas and poor drainage areas,” the statement said.

The state’s higher elevations, areas in the eastern mountain counties, saw snow Monday. The state Department of Transportation tweeted Monday afternoon:

“Pendleton Co: Heavy snow has CLOSED US 33 at North Mountain & just east of Franklin. Crews are working to treat roadway.”

Jefferson and Berkeley counties were placed under a flood watch through Monday evening.

The National Weather Service issued a Urban and Small Stream Flood Advisory for Southwestern Mercer County earlier Monday. It expired early Monday afternoon.
