CHARLESTON, W.Va. — A forecast for snow has many buzzing about the coming weekend, but it’s been so long since we’ve had winter like weather some may have become spoiled.
“We saw 60’s and near 70’s yesterday,” said Meteorologist Maura Casey with the National Weather Service in Charleston. “That’s unusual, but this snowfall that will be occurring through the weekend is actually really par for the course.”
Casey described the storm headed our way as a “classic up-slope snow event.” The system will deliver off and on snow from Thursday afternoon all the way into Monday. The accumulation will largely depend on what part of West Virginia you’re in.
“Lesser amounts in the lowlands since ground temperatures are still pretty warm in the 40’s. Afternoon temperatures will be in the 30’s in the lowlands of the southern coalfields, you’ll be hard pressed to find much accumulation,” said Casey. “But we’re expecting in the range of eight to 12 inches in the highest elevations through Monday.”
Casey said the most significant snowfall will hit Pocahontas, Randolph, and Tucker Counties. However, temperatures will be cooler in the western lowlands north of Route 50 which could bring a few inches of accumulation to those areas as well.
