MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — As we surmised three weeks ago, Jake Spavital will take over the play-calling duties at West Virginia, which says as much about Dana Holgorsen’s ability to delegate as it does about his coordinator’s development.
Today’s Gold & Blue Lunch Report wonders how the offense might change under Spavital’s direction, realizing that Holgorsen himself became a transformative play-caller the past three seasons. The head coach notes he’s “going to be lurking, but I’m not going to be questioning.” That means the offensive room will be Spavital’s domain, just as it was at Texas A&M and Cal, where he adapted the concepts he learned under Holgorsen.
A source told MetroNews that Holgorsen plans to place a personal emphasis on special teams with assistant Mark Scott focusing more on defensive backs.
