CHARLESTON, W.Va. — The state Division of Corrections and Division of Highways announced Thursday that both agencies will be cutting vehicles from its fleet.
In a news release, Governor Jim Justice said the DOC will eliminate 45 vehicles, which will save taxpayers around $60,000 a year.
Corrections will also reduce the number of vehicles assigned to individuals. Vehicles will be replaced after five years of after 120,000 miles over the four-year/100,000 mile benchmark. It’s a standard set by the state’s Office of Fleet Management.
“These action steps will allow us to reduce the size of our fleet and will generate cost savings for the people of West Virginia without significantly impacting our ability to perform daily operational tasks or respond to emergency situations,” Corrections Commissioner Jim Rubenstein said in a statement.
There will be 122 vehicles removed from the DOH.
“Governor Justice asked us to work diligently to identify where we can operate more efficiently,” stated State Secretary of Transportation Tom Smith. “Toward that end, the Division of Highways’ efforts to manage its fleet more effectively has resulted in reducing those numbers by 122 vehicles this year.”
Earlier this month, Governor Justice eliminated five state vehicles from his office.
