Class A No. 6 Notre Dame flashes depth in rout of Trinity

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — Notre Dame, the sixth-rated Class A team out of the MetroNews Power Index, used balanced scoring and defensive pressure to beat Trinity on the road Saturday, 72-42.

The Irish (13-5) led 27-22 at the half, but pulled away with a 21-10 third quarter effort where its defense sparked the scoring.

“We’ve been playing up a lot better over the last few games defensively,” said Notre Dame head coach Jarrod West. “They took the lead early in the third quarter, so for us to outscore them by 30 in the last 12 minutes of the game was a good showing.”

Jarrod West, Jr. led Notre Dame with 18 points, while Gabe Zummo added 16 points and Noah Bohanna scored 12 points. Zummo hit four 3s in the win for the Irish, while West made two shots from beyond the arc.

“We wore them out with our pressure, forced some turnovers and got it back to our tempo,” West, Jr. said. “Our chemistry has been really good this year. With Gabe (Zummo) making shots, Noah (Bohanna) is playing well and we’ve been able to go nine or 10 deep.”

The Marshall signee has helped lead Notre Dame on its recent streak, winning nine of its last 10 games after an initial 4-4 start against a rigorous schedule.

“It’s been a lot better just being able to come out here and have fun, not focusing on trying to impress anybody,” West, Jr. said. “I’ve been focused on the team and just trying to win – the ultimate goal is a state championship. It’s not about me – it’s been a lot easier this year (having already signed) and it’s been a fun year, too.”

Trinity fell to 9-9 with the loss. Notre Dame could also have a boost in the coming week or two as center Todd Griffith has been nearing full health after missing time with an injury – he practiced with the Irish on Friday, but didn’t play Saturday.
