Inmate gives deputy the slip on the way to jail

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — A man on his way to jail came up with a ruse to escape custody briefly on Friday night in Kanawha County.

A Jackson County deputy was transporting the unnamed inmate to the South Central Regional Jail Friday evening. Authorities say he told the deputy he was about to be sick, prompting the deputy to pull over and let him out of the back seat of the cruiser. The incident happened near the jail in the busy Southridge Shopping Plaza in Charleston.

Deputies say as soon as the suspect was out of the cruiser he bolted into the busy shopping center.

Officers from several law enforcement agencies were quickly on the scene searching for the man. He was soon located hiding in the bathroom of a restaurant in the area and taken back into custody.

Originally the man had been charged only with misdemeanors. Escape charges may be added to the list.
