Cowgirls hold off West Virginia women, 67-63

Karli Wheeler scored 17 points on Saturday as Oklahoma State defeated West Virginia 67-63 in Stillwater, Okla.

STILLWATER, Okla. — West Virginia nearly wiped out an 11-point deficit in the final three minutes, but Karli Wheeler’s four free throws helped Oklahoma State hang on 67-63 in women’s basketball Saturday night at Gallagher-Iba Arena.

Wheeler finished with 17 points and Kayli Jensen scored 16 as the Cowgirls (16-12, 6-11) won on senior night.

Teana Muldrow recorded her eighth double-double of the season with 19 points and 10 rebounds for the Mountaineers (19-10, 7-10) . Tynice Martin followed with 19 points, Lanay Montgomery scored nine points and grabbed six rebounds, and Chania Ray led the team with six assists.

“Give Oklahoma State credit, they took it right to us,” said WVU coach Mike Carey. “But we went right back and tied it up. They hit some big shots. (Jensen) hit some big 3s right there when the score was close that really hurt us. Give them credit.”

West Virginia shot 44.2 percent from the field and 40.0 percent (6-of-15) from 3-point range. The Mountaineers converted 11-of-11 from the free-throw line. Oklahoma State shot 40.3 percent (25-of-62) overall and 41.2 percent (7-of-17) from 3.
