HUNTINGTON, W.Va. — Independence completed a fourth straight Class AA/A high school wrestling state championship on Saturday night in dominating fashion.
The Patriots finished with 259 points, more than doubling the total score of runner-up East Fairmont (105.50 points). Petersburg took third place (84.50 points), followed by Oak Glen and Point Pleasant who both tied for fourth (74 points). Wirt County was the highest Class A team in the division, finishing 10th overall (55 points).
The Class AAA field tournament will be completed on Monday, March 13 and Tuesday, March 14 from the Fairmont Armory as the 145-pound, 152-pound and 170-pound weight classes will all be completed. Those three weight classes were postponed on Thursday due to a herpes concern.
Through the AAA weight classes completed, two-time defending champion Parkersburg South comfortably holds the top spot (202.50 points), followed by Parkersburg (119.50), University (118 points), Wheeling Park (86 points) and Hampshire (73 points).
