CHARLESTON, W.Va. — A man who already faced serious charges in Ohio is now facing equally serious charges in West Virginia after a weekend pursuit in Kanawha County.
Ohio Highway Patrol put out a bulletin Saturday night to be on the lookout for Todd Boyes, 44, of Caldwell, Ohio. He was wanted in Belmont, Ohio for a series of carjackings in which he allegedly had used a rifle during the commission of the crimes.
A Charleston police patrol officer spotted him on I-77 near the Yeager Bridge at around 8 p.m. Saturday and tried to initiate a traffic stop. Boyes refused to pull over, according to Charleston Police Chief of Detectives Lt. Steve Cooper.
“Mr. Boyes was not in the mood to stop and during the chase he actually rammed one of our Charleston Police cruisers and totaled that car,” Cooper said. “It sent that officer to the hospital.”
The officer, a female, has not been publicly identified by the department, but is said to be recovering.
The pursuit lasted for about 45 minutes and led up Route 114 into the Quick area. Boyes finally gave up in the Sanderson community.
“The officers actually had to discharge their firearms and Mr. Boyes was shot in the hand,” Cooper explained in an appearance on 580-Live on 580-WCHS Monday. “He then surrendered shortly thereafter.”
Since Boyes was shot by Charleston police, the investigation into the incident is being handled by the Kanawha Bureau of Investigation in the Kanawha County Sheriff’s Department.
Boyes was arraigned on fugitive from justice charges Monday and is in the South Central Regional Jail. The Kanawha County Prosecutor’s Office is reviewing the case and will determine what additional charges he’ll face.
