Morrisey meets with Trump to discuss energy, drug crisis

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Addressing West Virginia’s struggling coal industry and statewide drug epidemic were topics discussed Tuesday when state Attorney General Patrick Morrisey met with President Donald Trump.

The meeting was part of this week’s Winter Meeting of the National Association of Attorneys General at the White House.

“I appreciated the chance to impress upon President Trump the importance of eradicating the nation’s opioid epidemic and rolling back unlawful regulations that have crippled coal mining communities in West Virginia — both issues that are critical to economic growth,” Morrisey said in a news release.

Morrisey said he talked about the need to reduce the supply and demand of prescription opioids, as well the need for education in order prevent future addiction.

In regards to energy, Morrisey said he also discussed the need “to rollback eight years of job-killing regulation, including the so-called Clean Power Plan, all of which crippled investment in coal and devastated those who depend upon coal’s success.”

President Trump has said he supports coal and wants to bring coal jobs back to West Virginia.
