Additional information being collected by police in connection with Romney Sheetz shooting

ROMENY, W.Va. — More details are emerging following a shooting at the Romney Sheetz in Hampshire County.

Hampshire Prosecuting Attorney Dan James said they have obtained surveillance footage from Sheetz along with witness testimony.

On Feb. 21, Stewart Rockhold, 29, of Romney, and Charles Crowley, 32, of Shanks, were allegedly involved in an argument inside Sheetz which then continued outside of the store.

James said Rockhold and another person were waiting outside Crowley’s vehicle and then Rockhold attempted to get into the vehicle on the passenger side when the shooting occurred.

Three shots were fired including two inside the vehicle. Rockhold was shot in the face and was treated and released from the hospital.

Rockhold had been on day report supervision after being charged with a non-violent felony offense, James said.

On the day of the shooting James said Rockhold tested positive for several controlled substances. His office filed a motion to revoke his bond and there is an order for his arrest.

At this time, James said, there appears to be nothing criminal about Crowley’s actions on the day of the shooting.

James said they are trying to identify a motive.

“What we are concerned about right now is trying to find out why this fight occurred,” James said. “Did something transpire the night before or a couple of days before? We don’t believe this was a random argument that two people went into Sheetz and started an argument.”

Police believe the two men knew each other.
