DNR to cut 84 vehicles from fleet

SOUTH CHARLESTON, W.Va. – The West Virginia Division of Natural Resources announced Thursday plans to cut 84 vehicles from its fleet, following other state agencies in cutting costs through reducing the number of vehicles.

According to a statement from the division, the move would save the state around $500,000 during the 2017 fiscal year, and $150,000 annually in fuel, maintenance and insurance costs.

The total fleet would be reduced by 14 percent.

Agency Director Stephen McDaniel said reducing the fleet size will not hamper the division’s ability to perform daily operations.

“I’m proud that my staff has worked so diligently to do their part in identifying cost savings within the Division of Natural Resources,” McDaniel said.

Nick Casey, chief of staff for Gov. Jim Justice, said on Jan. 18 the governor’s office would cut five cars from its fleet. The state Division of Corrections, Division of Highways and Department of Environmental Protection announced reductions last month, totaling more than 200 additional vehicles.
