Webster County 911 Director hopeful power returns to all customers in county Thursday evening

WEBSTER SPRINGS, W.Va. — A strong series of storms knocked out power for 3500 residents, damaged some buildings, outhouses, and property, and knocked out power in three Webster County Schools Wednesday.

But Webster County 911 and Office of Emergency Services Director Richard Rose said, by and large, the county was fortunate compared to what they’ve faced in the past.

“We don’t have any requests for any shelter heat,” he said. “We’re continuing to monitor that process due to the power outages and the cooler temperatures setting in.”

As of 1:30 p.m. Thursday afternoon, approximately 1600 people were still without power. Power could be restored as soon as Thursday evening.

“We’re hoping,” Rose said. “It depends on what kind of trouble they find on this high-intensity line that runs to that substation over there.”

The substation in question is near Hacker Valley Elementary School, which remained closed Thursday due to loss of power.

Rose said, overall, first responders and citizens alike were well-prepared for these storms.

“We’re having such a significant change in weather,” he said. “Going from 65 degrees one day. We went to a rain and wind event the next day. Then it was snowing this morning.”

The County has been recommending residents prepare for 72 hours when events like Wednesday’s pop up.

“We really stress that to all of our citizens here,” Rose said. “That’s really important. It kind of helps us out on using our resources wisely until we are able to get additional help in here if need be.”

Rose said he was unsure if Hacker Creek Elementary School would re-open Friday.
