Two charged in Boone County murder

MADISON, W.Va. — Two Boone County residents are jailed on charges of murder and conspiracy this morning.

Boone County Sheriff’s Deputies arrested Mitchell Hughes, 25, and Brittany Thomas, 22, of Racine, West Virginia overnight. The two are charged in the killin gof James “Gumby” Smith, 37, of Peytona back on Wednesday ight.

Investigators say Smith was runover intentionally with a vehicle drive by Hughes.

Investigators say all three knew one another and both Hughes and Smith had been engaged in an intimate relationship with Thomas over the last several months.

Thomas and Hughes are lodged in the South Central Regional Jail.
