Huge comeback at Tulane goes for naught; WVU’s streak ends

NEW ORLEANS — West Virginia erased a seven-run deficit only to lose 9-8 at Tulane on Grant Brown’s two-out walkoff single in the ninth Friday night.

The loss dropped the Mountaineers to 6-3 and ended their six-game winning streak. Tulane snapped a seven-game slide and improved to 2-7.

After a rocky start by BJ Myers, West Virginia trailed 7-0 before countering with a five-run sixth. A bases-clearing double by Kyle Davis — who had a career-high four hits — was the big blow.

In the top of the ninth, Kyle Gray drew his second bases-loaded walk of the game to knot it 8-8, but Tulane reliever Robert Price (1-0) escaped the one-out jam with no more damage.

Jackson Sigman (0-1) pitched a perfect eighth for the Mountaineers before allowing the Sal Gozzo’s leadoff single in the bottom of the ninth. Braden Zabrinski walked the bases full before surrendering Brown’s game-winning single.

WVU scored eight runs on 11 hits with one error, while TU scored nine runs on 11 hits and did not commit an error. The Mountaineers stranded 12 runners on base while Tulane left six.

Myers allowed seven runs, five earned, on eight hits and two walks over five innings. He fanned five and threw 83 pitches.

Tulane starter Corey Merrill exited after 5 2/3 innings having surrendered five runs on eight hits and four walks.
