Sen. Byrd traveling exhibit to open in Williamson

WILLIAMSON, W.Va. — A traveling exhibit honoring the life of the late U.S. Senator Robert C. Byrd opens Tuesday morning in Mingo County.

The next stop is the lobby of the First National Bank on Second Avenue in Williamson.

Dee Kapourales, president of the Mingo-Pike American Association of University Women, said the exhibit was transported to them from the Robert C. Byrd Center for Congressional History and Education at Shepherd University.

“They have produced this beautiful exhibit. Bright colors and lots of good information. They are sending it around the state as part of his centennial birthday coming up in November,” Kapourales said on Monday’s MetroNews “Talkline.”

The exhibit is quite an attraction anywhere it goes because Byrd made a huge impact in West Virginia, especially in the southern coalfields, Kapourales said.

“People here really loved the man. He’d come into town and bring his fiddle, would stand on the courthouse steps and play. People would gather around just to listen to him. He’d play with local musicians. He was really beloved down here,” she said.

A ribbon cutting ceremony is scheduled for 11 a.m. Tuesday.
