Weingarten visits Jefferson County schools

SHENANDOAH JUNCTION, W.Va. – American Federation of Teachers President Randi Weingarten visited two Jefferson County schools Tuesday.

Weingarten visited Jefferson High School in the morning, then T.A. Lowery Elementary in the afternoon.

AFT President Randi Weingarten

Weingarten made the visit as part of an effort to visit schools in the country where AFT members teach at least once a week. She said she enjoys having the opportunity to spend time with teachers.

“That’s where the connection is between the people we serve and the people we represent,” Weingarten said. “Everyone of our members is making a difference every day.”

Weingarten was visiting schools in Illinois last week.

The union president took the time to meet with educators and answer questions from union members, noting she was impressed with one thing during her visit.

“Just how much the educators care about kids,” Weingarten said.

This is the first time an AFT president had visited the area.
