Eastern Panhandle drug roundup focus on heroin

MARTINSBURG, W.Va. — More than two dozen people were arrested in Eastern Panhandle Friday as part of a drug roundup aimed at the heroin epidemic.

Berkeley County Prosecuting Attorney Catie Wilkes Delligatti called it a “concerted effort” to clean up the area.

According to authorities, heroin coming into the Eastern Panhandle is mainly from Baltimore. The supply chain was the focus of the sweep.

Twenty-nine people were taken into custody Friday, 17 of those in Martinsburg. There remain 50 arrest warrants outstanding, authorities said.

Martinsburg Police Chief Maury Richards thanked the prosecuting attorney and acknowledged the effort put in by the police departments.

“We realize that the drug epidemic and the drug dealers don’t know about this,” Richards said. “So we have to work as a team and I’m glad that Martinsburg PD is a part of this team.”
