Higher elevations, Eastern Panhandle brace for winter storm

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — The National Weather Service has placed several of West Virginia’s eastern mountain counties and the Eastern Panhandle under a Winter Storm Warning beginning Monday evening through Tuesday afternoon.

Heavy, wet snow is in the forecast from Greenbrier County northeast toward the panhandle.

In the warning issued Sunday night, the NWS said 3-6 inches of snow is possible in eastern Greenbrier County for Monday evening through Tuesday morning. Western Greenbrier County could get up to 10 inches.

Eight to 12 inches Is possible in parts of Tucker and Preston counties.

Other counties under the warning include Grant, Hampshire, Hardy, Pendleton, Mineral, Jefferson, Morgan and Berkeley counties where accumulations could reach 6-10 inches.

A Winter Storm Watch is in effect for Taylor, Upshur, Barbour, Nicholas, Webster, Pocahontas and Randolph counties. The forecast for the western lowland counties is mostly rain.

Appalachian Power Company announced storm preparation efforts Sunday night. The company will move contract crews from Charleston to Beckley for staging while crews from Wheeling and Huntington will be dispatched to the Roanoke and Lynchburg, Va. areas.
