Winter Storm Stella hits Eastern Panhandle

MARTINSBURG, W.Va. — Eastern Panhandle residents had braced for the worst but it looks like Winter Storm Stella did not pack quit the punch forecasters had predicted.

Still, with as much as a foot of snow in places and low temperatures snow and ice could linger for several days.

Accuweather Meteorologist Mike Leseney said the problem moving forward will be sustained winds of 20 to 25 miles per hour overnight on Tuesday.

“Gusting to 30, 35 (mph) so that may cause for drifting snow to complicate keeping the roads clear,” he told MetroNews affiliate WEPM.

Plow trucks with the Division of Highways have been working to clear primary roads since late Monday night.

Officials hoped to tackle secondaries in the late morning or early afternoon.

It will be a constant battle against the wind and potentially more snow later in the week.

“We could see, particularly tomorrow or tomorrow night, a couple of snow showers with some small accumulation,” Leseney said.

Leseney anticipated no more than three to five additional inches of snow fall with temperatures climbing into the 40’s by Friday.
