Charleston Police look for answers in boy’s tragic death

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — There are a lot of questions surrounding this week’s death of a teenager in a Charleston automobile accident.

Police say Jeremy Bush, 13, of Charleston was killed when a van he was driving struck a retaining wall and a garage on Charleston’s Woodward Drive at high speed.   Bush was in the custody of the DHHR and was housed at Charleston’s ResCare skilled nursing facility.  One of the key issues is how he got the keys to the van.

“The keys should have been locked in a safe,” said Lt. Steve Cooper, Chief of Detectives for the Charleston Police Department. “That’s the policy and the procedure for keys to any vehicle on the premises.  We really don’t know if the keys were out or he somehow knew how to get into the safe.”

The ResCare facility where Bush was housed is typically a facility which offers treatment to those with a disability. It’s unclear what condition caused Bush to be treated there.  The DHHR has released no information about the teen or the case, citing privacy issues.

“Most of what we were focused on is the crash and the death of the young man,” Cooper said. “At this point we don’t see any criminal conduct on anyone’s part. But the circumstances which led up to it will be compiled and listed in a report that should answer all those questions.”
