Myers handcuffs Baylor in Big 12 baseball opener

WACO, Texas — BJ Myers struck out six over eight innings and West Virginia’s 4-5-6 hitters collected seven hits during a 7-1 win over No. 10 Baylor in Friday night’s Big 12 opener.

Myers (2-1) allowed one run on five hits and no walks for the Mountaineers, whose record improved to 9-7 overall and 1-0 in league play. They came in having dropped three of four but have yet to play a home game.

Baylor starter Nick Lewis (3-1) lasted only four innings, giving up five runs on 10 hits and three walks with five strikeouts.

Jackson Cramer put WVU ahead with an RBI single in the first and his sac-fly made it 4-1 in the fourth. The cleanup-hitting first baseman went 2-for-2 with two walks. Behind him Cole Austin was 3-for-5 and Darius Hill 2-for-5.

Catcher Ivan Gonzales added a two-run double in the top of the ninth for WVU before reliever Jackson Sigman finished off the Bears with a scoreless bottom half.

Baylor fell to 15-3, 0-1.
