Public hearing Monday on parental notification bill

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — A public hearing is scheduled Monday morning at the state capitol on the pro-life supported parental notification bill.

The hearing for the bill (HB 2002) is scheduled to begin at 8:30 a.m. in the House Chamber.

Supporters say the bill removes the loophole that has allowed some girls to bypass their parents’ permission to obtain an abortion. The bill removes the doctor’s authorization option currently used by some unemancipated minors.

Current state law requires minor girl give 24-hour notice to a parent or legal guardian but that requirement can be bypassed by the doctor’s authorization or if she goes to court and obtains a waiver. Supporters say a unemancipated minor is not mature enough to make the decisions.

The bill is currently before the House Judiciary Committee after being approved in the House Health Committee last week.
