CLARKSBURG, W.Va. — Notre Dame senior point guard Jarrod West was named the Evans Award winner, given annually by the West Virginia Sports Writers Association to the top boys basketball player in the state.
West led Notre Dame to a 23-5 record and Class A state championship, the school’s first.
West entered state tournament play averaging 20.5 points, six rebounds, six assists and six steals per contest. In tournament play, he finished the quarterfinals with 16 points, nine rebounds and nine assists. In the semifinals, West scored 35 points. His championship game effort included 29 points, six assists, four rebounds and four steals.
Poca’s Luke Frampton finished second in the voting, while Huntington’s Mikal Dawson was third, Capital’s Leondre Rogers fourth and Bluefield’s Mookie Collier fifth. West is the first Class A winner of the award since Mullens’ Herbie Brooks back in 1984.
West will be presented with the Evans Award trophy at the annual WVSWA Victory Awards Dinner which will take place at 4 p.m. on May 21 at Village Square Conference Center in Clarksburg.
