MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — The man accused of building hopping at WVU and secretly living in campus facilities will spend 2-10 years in prison.
Dong Xu was arrested in March 2016 after police determined he had been storing possessions above ceiling tiles in university buildings, stolen office items and essentially lived in campus buildings for up to a year.
There was evidence that he had been using Stansbury, Hodges and Armstrong halls to hide belongings.
After an indictment by a Monongalia County grand jury, Xu pleaded guilty to one count of entering without breaking and one count of possessing material depicting minors engaged in sexually explicit conduct.
Monongalia County Circuit Court Judge Susan Tucker sentenced Xu to 1-10 years for breaking without entering and 2-10 years on the pornography related charges. The sentences were ordered to be served concurrently.
According to university police, Xu was using a university computer when he was arrested. Several hundred illegal images were discovered on the computer during the investigation.
Xu had been a WVU student in 2009 but had not been registered for classes since then.
He was born and educated in China. At his sentencing, Xu indicated he and a girlfriend broke up, he dropped out of classes and began living a homeless lifestyle.
