West Virginia players celebrate last season’s 35-32 win over BYU at FedExField in Landover, Md. The Mountaineers will open the 2017 season at the same venue, on Sunday, Sept. 3 against Virginia Tech.

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — West Virginia’s football season opener against Virginia Tech will get a Sunday night prime-time slot Sept. 3 on ABC after the schools announced a scheduling change Friday.

The game at FedExField in Landover, Md., will kick off at 7:30 p.m. Eastern and mark their first meeting in 12 years.

College football has showcased opening-week games on the Sunday of Labor Day weekend because the NFL regular season doesn’t start until the following week.

The Mountaineers and Hokies are both coming off 10-win seasons and feature large alumni bases adjacent to Washington, D.C.

West Virginia edged BYU 35-32 at FedExField last season after beating James Madison 42-12 there in 2012.
