Talkline: WVSSAC’s Dolan discusses home schooled athletes bill

PARKERSBURG, W.Va. — West Virginia Secondary Schools Activities Commission Bernie Dolan joined Hoppy Kercheval on MetroNews “Talkline” Monday to discuss the SSAC’s dissent to a bill that would open sports and other extracurricular activities at public schools and some private schools to home schooled students.

“One of the main pillars of our organization is that you should be enrolled in that school to represent them,” Dolan said. “It’s only four periods a day – if you went four periods a day, you could participate.

“There are a lot of people who are doing an incredible job with home schooling,” he continued. “But they don’t see the other group that we see at the high school level of (kids) dropping out of school, but calling it home school so that they can avoid the legal system for compulsory education.”

Dolan said the SSAC would be more in favor of Senate Bill 630 which would include online classes from public schools and home schooling for part of the day.
