Wheeling City Council will look at smoking ban economic impact

WHEELING, W.Va. — The Wheeling City Council will decide later this month on whether or not to ban smoking in the city.

The council voted Tuesday to pay for an economic impact study to better understand the effects of becoming a smoke-free city.

The Wheeling-Ohio County Health Department decided last year to expand the smoking ban for most of the county. The ban did not affect the Wheeling Island Hotel-Casino-Racetrack or businesses with designated video lottery rooms.

The study passed in a 6-1 vote. Councilwoman Wendy Scatterday voted against the measure because of concerns over second-hand smoking.

The council will vote on April 11 to discuss the ban.
