Bishop Donahue with walk-off over No. 3 Charleston Catholic

BRIDGEPORT, W.Va. — Bishop Donahue went 2-0 in the 2017 Catholic School Baseball Classic from Bridgeport on Saturday, starting the day in dramatic fashion with a 6-5 win over No. 3 Charleston Catholic.

The Bishops (7-7) scored two runs in the bottom of the sixth and three runs in the bottom of the seventh to complete the comeback over the Irish (8-3).

Charleston Catholic led 5-1 after a four-run fifth.

“We showed a lot of heart with two outs in the seventh,” said Bishop Donahue coach Bob Kleeh. “I’m just proud of the way that we battled, didn’t throw in the towel and just kept working.”

Logan Wells hit the game-winning walk-off single in the seventh, scoring Doug Clark and Nate Rush.

It’s a Bishop Donahue team that began the season in the top 10, but dropped out of the rankings this week with a 3-7 start against a challenging schedule.

Saturday’s win erased a lot of those early struggles.

“This is a heck of a win against a heck of a program,” Kleeh said. “We’re just chipping our way, trying to get ready for the first of May.”

Bishop Donahue also defeated Notre Dame on Saturday as a part of the Classic, 15-7, while Charleston Catholic later rebounded with a 5-2 win over Madonna.

“Tip your cap to Bishop Donahue, they found a way to win the game,” said Charleston Catholic coach Bill Mehle. “We had two defensive miscues in the final inning (against Bishop Donahue) and gave them five outs to score three runs.

“It was a disappointing loss for us. We’ve lost three one-run games,” he continued. “It’s early in the season, so our message is that we need to find a way to close games and win the tight ones against good competition.”
