Nearly perfect Grove earns national recognition

West Virginia sophomore Michael Grove was named Big 12 pitcher of the week and one of Collegiate Baseball’s national players of the week.

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — West Virginia’s Michael Grove took a perfect game into the eighth inning on Saturday and took home two awards Monday. The sophomore right-hander was named Big 12 Pitcher of the Week and one of the National Players of the Week by Collegiate Baseball.

A product of Wheeling Park High, Grove retired the first 23 batters he faced during an 8-0 win over Kansas. A two-out single that broke up the perfect game turned out to be the lone Jayhawks baserunner as Grove fanned 12 over eight innings.

His record improved to 3-1 with his third consecutive quality start.

The Mountaineers (19-11) visit No. 21 Maryland on Tuesday before opening a three-game series against No. 2 TCU on Friday.
