Shute trial still on for late June

BERKELEY SPRINGS, W.Va. — A triple murder trial remains scheduled for late June in Morgan County following a status hearing Tuesday in Berkeley Springs.

Erick Shute, 32, of Great Cacapon remains in custody awaiting trial.

Erick Shute, 32, of Great Cacapon, is accused of what police called the ambush-style slayings of three men last June.

Shute was indicted in January with three counts of murder in the deaths of Jack Douglas, 49, of Great Cacapon, and Willie Bartley, 49, and his son, Travis Bartley, 24, both of Hedgesville.

Court records show the victims were working for the owner of the property next door to Shute’s on the day of the shootings. There had reportedly been a dispute about trespassing.

Tuesday’s status hearing confirmed the start of the trial for June 21. A pretrial hearing is set for June 6 at 9:00 a.m.
