Justice signs bill to fill current year revenue gap; vetoes fifth bill from regular session

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — Gov. Jim Justice has signed a bill into law aimed at filling the projected revenue gap this fiscal year.

Justice signed 14 bills Monday including the measure (HB 2801) that takes approximately $40.7 million from the Rainy Day Fund and $60 million from the sweeping of various special revenue accounts to address the 2017 budget year hole that could grow to as high at $123 million.

Justice also signed a number of supplemental appropriation bills Monday along with a decision to veto his fifth bill. Justice rejected the bill (SB 248) that would have clarified the composition and chairmanship of the legislature’s Commission on Special Investigations. A veto message was not immediately posted.

The governor’s other vetoes have included legislation dealing with the state budget, greyhound racing, physician assistants and right-to-work. Lawmakers voted to override the veto of the right-to-work clarification bill (SB 330).

Justice has 15 days to decide what to do with bills that were passed during the final few days of the regular session once they reach his desk.
