No. 7 Morgantown beats No. 6 University for 6th straight win

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — Class AAA No. 7 Morgantown beat rival and No. 6 University 10-5 on Tuesday night in high school baseball action.

The Mohigans (11-4) erased an early 2-0 deficit with seven runs in the bottom of the first inning.

“We’re always happy to win and happy to win in this rivalry,” said Morgantown coach Mark McCarty. “Both teams could probably play a little bit better than we did today. In order to beat them again, we’re going to have to play better than we did.

“If it hadn’t of been for those early runs, it would have been a dogfight,” McCarty said. “We definitely won’t be taking them for granted any time soon. Those are two pretty evenly matched teams.”

Catcher Michael DeFelice went 2-for-4 from the plate in the win for Morgantown, including two doubles, two RBIs and two runs scored.

University, which went 1-4 last week against stiff competition in Florida, dropped to 6-5 overall on the year with the loss.

“We have to learn to make sound, baseball plays and our pitchers have got to learn to throw strikes,” said University coach Buck Riggleman. “(Falling behind early) takes a lot out of you. My emphasis to (the players after Florida) is that I don’t want to just be competitive with teams, I want to reach the pinnacle and we have to learn to win these games.”

It was the eighth win in the last nine games for Morgantown.

“We’re playing pretty well right now,” McCarty said. “I don’t think we’re peaking by any means, I don’t think we’re playing as well as we can. But I feel like we’ve won some games against some pretty good competition.”
