Twelve-year-old girl charged with setting church altar on fire

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. — A 12-year-old girl has been charged with setting a church altar on fire in Huntington, police said.

The fire took place Monday evening at St. John’s Episcopal Church. There were no injuries.

Some sort of kindling was used to start the blaze on the church’s main altar, according to Rev. Lisa Graves. The flames were contained to a small area. There will have to be some painting done and carpet replaced, Graves said.

There was a special prayer service at the church Tuesday night.

“The kind of anger and pain that would lead a child to this sort of thing is an overwhelming thought,” Graves told WSAZ-TV.

Huntington police said the name of the girl would not be released. She had no previous connection to the church, church officials said.
