Charleston police hope to close in on those who fired 30-plus shots

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — Chief of Detectives Lt. Steve Cooper says it’s amazing no one was injured when more than 30 shots were fired in broad daylight Wednesday on Charleston’s West Side. It was one of three separate shootings in the city over a few hour period.

Nearly three dozen shots were fired on Charleston’s West Side Wednesday.

Police found evidence of nearly three dozen shots near the intersection of Park Avenue and Main Street, Cooper said.

“No one was injured but there were numerous cars and houses that had bullet holes in them. It was broad daylight with that many rounds fired that was pretty alarming to those who live down there and pretty alarming to us,” Cooper said during an appearance Thursday on WCHS Radio’s 580 Live with Charleston Mayor Danny Jones.

There are currently no suspects in the shooting only a description of two black men wearing hoodies.

“We believe we know who the intended target was,” Cooper said. “Somebody knows who did it–they bragged to a friend or they knew they were going to do it. Based on how flagrant and reckless that was (we’ll take) even an anonymous tip because those guys need to be caught.”

Ninety minutes before that shooting three people were in an argument at a residence on Hillcrest Drive and one of them used a CO2-powered pellet gun to shoot the other two. Sarah Byrd, 24, and Michael Crouch, both of Charleston, were injured. Police have an arrest warrant for the alleged shooter, Robert Jarvis, 57, of Charleston.

Later Wednesday on Charleston’s 4th Avenue a juvenile was held at gunpoint, Cooper said.

“The grandmother of the juvenile came outside and yelled at the suspects not to shoot her grandson. They then fired at least one round beside his head. They fled the scene in a car and tore up at least two fences in the area,” Cooper said.

No arrests have been made.
