W.Va. inmate gets 40 years for prison stabbing death

MOUNT OLIVE, W.Va. — An prison inmate at the Mount Olive Correctional Complex in Fayette County will spend an additional 40 years behind bars for second degree murder.

Stephen Branscome, who is already serving time for attempted murder in Mercer County and federal gun charges, sentenced Thursday in court.

Fayette County Prosecutor Larry Harrah said Branscome stabbed a man to death with a manufactured weapon on prison grounds in March 2016.

The 40-year sentence will run consecutive to the other prison sentences he’s serving, Harrah said.

State Police handled the investigation.
