Man convicted in Berkeley County murder case

MARTINSBURG, W.Va. — A North Carolina man was found guilty Thursday afternoon in a Berkeley County murder case.

The panel convicted James Love, 39, of Indian Trail, N.C., in the July 2015 death Tracey Leigh McCauley, 52, of Hedgesville. Love was found guilty of first degree murder with mercy following approximately two hours of deliberations.

Love told a man he shared a jail cell with that he killed McCauley after she refused to give him $200. The two had lived together at a residence along Route 9 in Berkeley County but weren’t believed to be romantically involved, police have previously said.

McCauley’s hands and feet were found tied behind her back on the floor of her residence.

The jury also found Love guilty of four other criminal counts. He’ll face life in prison with a chance for parole after 15 years when he is sentenced June 26.
