Gibson becomes 2nd WVU player drafted; others sign free-agent deals

West Virginia receiver Shelton Gibson, who left school after his junior season, was selected by the Philadelphia Eagles in the fifth round of the NFL draft Saturday.

The 22nd receiver selected, Gibson landed at No. 166 overall with the same team that picked cornerback Rasul Douglas in the third round.

Gibson caught 43 passes for 951 yards and eight touchdowns last season as a fourth-year junior at West Virginia.

The Big 12 had only 14 players drafted overall, led by four from Oklahoma.

The final day of the draft was uneventful for other Mountaineers, especially All-Big 12 center Tyler Orlosky, who showed up as a third- or fourth-round in several mock drafts. He’ll have to make his way in camp as a free-agent signee, also with the Eagles.

Other undrafted West Virginia players who signed free-agent deals:

Defensive end Noble Nwachukwu — 49ers

Defensive tackle Christian Brown — Steelers

Offensive lineman Adam Pankey — Packers

Quarterback Skyler Howard — Seahawks

Running back Rushel Shell — Steelers

Receiver Daikiel Shorts — Bills

Nose guard Darrien Howard — Cardinals

Cornerback Maurice Fleming — Buccaneers

Safety Jeremy Tyler — Bills
