MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — No. 25 West Virginia beat Oklahoma 4-2 in the completion of a suspended game before the Sooners claimed the nightcap 3-1 on Saturday.
The Mountaineers (25-16, 10-7 Big 12) led 1-0 in the second game until Oklahoma’s Kyle Mendenhall hit a three-run double in the seventh. That spoiled a gem by WVU freshman Alek Manoah (0-1), who gave up five hits over eght innings.
“They scored three runs with one swing of the bat,” said West Virginia coach Randy Mazey. “There weren’t many offensive threats by either team in that second game, they just took advantage of one and we didn’t.
“Manoah went out there and pitched as well as he has since he’s been here, so that was super encouraging and we needed that.”
The Sooners (29-16, 7-7 Big 12) got a 5 2/3 innings from Kyle Tyler before reliever Connor Berry (2-0) fanned three in a 1 1/3 innings. J.B. Olson recorded the final six outs for his seventh save.
Kyle Davis was 3-for-4 with his seventh homer of the season.
The series finale is Sunday at 11:30 a.m.
Reliver Sam Kessler (1-2) earned the opening-game win for the Mountaineers, who returned Saturday from the previous night’s weather postponement trailing 2-1 in the sixth.
West Virginia took the lead in the bottom half with two runs including the go-ahead RBI single by Kyle Gray.
Sophomore Braden Zarbnisky got the final out of the eighth inning and allowed three baserunners to reach in the ninth on an error, a single and a two-out walk. But he induced a flyout to end the game for his third save.
Junior right-hander BJ Myers, limited to five innings because of Friday’s rain delay, allowed two runs on five hits with three strikeouts and no walks.
