Long-sought RB Leddie Brown pledges to Mountaineers

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — West Virginia received a commitment Sunday from Delaware three-star running back Leddie Brown, a prospect the Mountaineers have pursued since his eighth-grade year.

Rivals ranks Brown the No. 18 running back prospect in the class of 2018.

The 6-foot-1, 190-pounder holds offers from Florida, Tennessee, Louisville, North Carolina, Maryland, Syracuse, Rutgers and UConn.

“He’s an effective return man for his high school team and also lines up at wide receiver on some snaps,” said Rivals writer Keenan Cummings. “He especially excels taking screen passes and shows good vision weaving in and out of tacklers to produce big plays.”

Before leading Smyrna High to last season’s Delaware state championship, Brown played at the now-defunct Eastern Christian Academy, a program that produced Wendell Smallwood, Daikiel Shorts and David Sills.

That relationship with West Virginia could have turned cloudy when Brown’s primary recruiter, assistant coach Ja’Juan Seider, left for Florida in February. In fact, the Gators offered Brown a scholarship only days after Seider joined the staff.

But new Mountaineers running backs coach Tony Dews continued to make Brown a priority.

“West Virginia continued to sit at the top of the list for Brown, and that was only solidified during his trip to Morgantown for the spring game April 15, when he met with Dews,” said Cummings.

With Brown in the fold and Justin Crawford representing the only upperclassman running back on the roster, the Mountaineers may be finished restocking that position for this recruiting cycle.

West Virginia’s commitments for 2018:

James Gmiter (Bethel Park, Pa.) 6-4, 300 DT 3 stars
Leddie Brown (Smyrna, Del.) 6-1, 190 RB 3 stars
Mike O’Laughlin (Oak Park, Ill.) 6-5, 215 TE 3 stars
Tyrese Allen (Paintsville, Ky.) 6-3, 290 DT 3 stars
