Saturday morning arrest wasn’t first encounter between alleged attacker and troopers

LOGAN, W.Va. — A violent home invasion in Logan County from the weekend left two people injured and their neighbor behind bars.

State Police arrested James Mullins, 28, early Saturday morning after the alleged break-in and attack of his elderly neighbors in the South Fork Road area of Logan County’s Mill Creek community.   Witnesses say Mullins was extremely intoxicated when he kicked in the door of the couples’ home around 2 a.m. Saturday.

Inside, State Police say Mullins violently beat an elderly man who was unable to walk and then tried to sexually assault the man’s wife who was confined to a wheelchair.

“Based upon information from witnesses at the scene there was a lot of alcohol involved,” said State Police Sgt. C.D. Kuhn, “Mr. Mullins had been drinking throughout the day and was highly intoxicated.”

It wasn’t the first time in the night troopers had been there.  They responded to a call at another nearby residence late Friday night over complaints of a loud party.

“They’re neighbors and there have been complaints in the past of loud music and loud parties,” said Kuhn. “Actually around midnight the same trooper who responded was called to the same area for a loud music complaint.  Mr. Mullins had turned it down and went to another residence.”

Troopers say Mullins apparently decided to restart the party around 2 a.m. before heading to his neighbors’ house.  When State Police arrived for a second time, Mullins was found at his home and didn’t go quietly.

“He was very combative,” said Kuhn. “He offered a lot of resistance to our troopers by kicking and spitting on them.”

Mullins was eventually subdued with pepper spray and taken into custody.  Today he’s lodged in the Southwestern Regional Jail facing charges of sexual assault, night time burglary, obstructing an officer, battery on an officer and assault on an officer.
