Sleeping passenger killed in Turnpike crash

CABIN CREEK, W.Va. — A passenger asleep in a tractor-trailer was thrown from the sleeper cab and died following a crash on the West Virginia Turnpike Monday afternoon, state police said.

The crash took place not long after stormy weather had moved through the area. The tractor-trailer driver lost control of the rig in the southbound lanes just before the Chelyan toll plaza in Kanawha County. The truck hit a guardrail and then the bridge that crosses Cabin Creek Road. The victim was thrown down into the road, troopers said.

The name of the victim has not been released. The driver was taken to the hospital.
